Earlier this summer we were getting ready for our family holiday, dusty suitcases removed from the loft containing plug adapters, travel kettle, an odd flip flop and an inflatable unicorn that had seen better days ....no toiletry bag to be seen.
So, I decided to make one. It was quick to put together and I used two fat quarters, one cotton and a fat quarter of bamboo towelling.
Bamboo towelling is made sustainably using viscose made from bamboo pulp. With a blend of natural and synthetic fibres this fabric is breathable and absorbent. Perfect for a toiletry travel trap, re-useable and washable. What's not to like?
You Will Need
- Cotton Fabric (1 fat quarter)
- Bamboo Towelling (1 fat quarter)
- Iron & an ironing board
- Sharp scissors, pins, corresponding coloured thread
- Sewing machine

Instructions
Step 1.
Cut one square of towelling & one outer fabric measuring 50x50cms.
Step 2.
Take the remaining outer fabric (which will be a 5cm strip if your fabric was a traditional sized fat quarter of 50cm x 55cm) and cut it in half lengthways. This will be used to make your ties.
There is a traditional way to make ties which involves folding the fabric right side to right, stitching it and turning it the right way round (bagging out).
Follow my easy way to make ties!
Step 3.
Lay the outer fabric right side up. Place the end of both ties on the left side of the material approximately halfway up and pin in place.
Step 4.
Place the towelling right side down over the ties and pin leaving a 12cm gap in the bottom. This will allow you to turn your wrap the right way round. Stitch around the edge allowing for a 1cm seam allowance. Mitre the corners (cut the corners - think of the top of a Bishops hat) This reduces the bulk in the seams.
Step 5.
Turn the roll the right way round and press. The ties should be on the outside. Top stitch around the outside edge. This will reinforce the stitching on the ties.
Step 6.
Lay the wrap with the inside up and lift the bottom edge to the middle. Pin to secure.
Top stitch the left and right edges.
I measured and made different sized pockets to fit various toiletry items... 7cms/3/3/4/4/12/7/3/6cms
Stitch in straight lines from the bottom to the top to make pockets, over stitch the top and the bottom (this reinforces the pockets).
Continue to the end of the roll.
